ReFresh Detroit! grant to help revitalize commercial strip

Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation (JSCDC) recently submitted a successful application to the City of Detroit Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (ONCR) to obtain ReFresh Detroit! designation for the local commercial district. This will provide local business owners with access to free architectural consultations and matching funds for facade improvements. The Joy-Southfield ReFresh Detroit! District extends on Joy Road between Evergreen Road and Southfield Freeway. Interested business owners can contact JSCDC at (313) 581-7773, ext. 104.

Ordinarily, we're all in favor of facade improvements based on architectural consultation. However, it looks as though this neighborhood has more serious needs. Where income, health care, and basic needs are missing, concentrating on support for entrepreneurs, building opportunities for entrepreneurs, and other job skill and job generation projects seem more important.

We agree, Nancy. This is why we also provide free primary and preventive health care to the uninsured, free preventive health education and disease management groups to anyone, free home repairs for low-income families, free foreclosure prevention counseling, affordable housing programs, & youth mentoring. Vocational programs for young adults and urban gardening are in the developmental stages. The facade improvement program is a relatively minor component of our community development programs. However, we expect that it will significantly contribute to the revitalization of this area.
